These last chapters of First Isaiah serve as an epilogue, but simultaneously form a link to Second Isaiah (Isa. 40–55). This is especially so with the last chapter (ch. 39). Most interpreters share the opinion that these chapters originally stood apart, being compiled after Isaiah’s day. They were then added to chs. 1–35 before the book continues with ch. 40.
